Now, with the project only in the development phase, it’s difficult to tell how involved each program will be in determining who will receive funding, or what caveats may come with the funding (only supporting a narrow selection of genres being one example). So venues with a broader genre base, or off-colour genre base, may not see the funding at all. But having fiscal support for Edmonton’s music scene reach the municipal government at least shows that the topic is being discussed with people who have the power to change things. Bennet also alluded to pursuing funding less from public agencies than private organizations who have shown interest in being involved.
All of this to say: Let’s not just sit and do the Edmonton thing of bitching about Edmonton. Don’t let the loss of the Artery just be a Facebook share. Become a Phil Muz who put time and effort and care into something he wanted to support and watch it grow. Why?
Because Edmonton needs it.
